The Torus
THE TORUS
PROCESS:
1. Here I measured aluminium sheet, cut to size and marked out guide lines to hammer. The using a wide head mallet i slowly started puckling and shrinking the center line.
2. Here I am using the stump guide to check the degree of curvature and started to slowly shape the outer surface.
3. Here I am using a type of anvil to further exaggerate the double curvature .
4. Here I am using the anvil to remove high and low spots in the edges as well as utilizing a shrinker to shrink the edges making a curve both ways.
5. Here are photos of the form of the torus.
FINISHING:
1. Using 400p waterproof sandpaper
2. Wiping down with methylated spirits
3. Applying metal polish and elbow grease
FINAL PRODUCT:
I am very pleased with the finished result of the torus, it presents a double curvature surface using aluminium sheet metal. The torus was more complicated than the bowl due to the shrinking and stretching process being more directional. The polished surface brings out the aluminium's potential to lustre.
